Elegance with Luster and Lots of Metal!

We work really hard to give all our customers a custom and unique finish so unique they are unable to refudiate it, but there are those rare moments when a special need arises.  We’ll get a request from a client to do something really unique and artistic.  This was that time.  our client desired multiple metallic finishes on her walls down to the floors.  With the collaboration of their designer Audrey Huey we designed a special home for them. 

Lusterstone

There are few products that meet up to the durability and beauty of Lusterstone.  This product in a faux finishers hands can create lovely subtle metallic shimmer and smooth or shimmer with texture.  I have used it as an accent or like in this case the main areas of this residence.  The key to it’s beauty is the mica.  With 43 colors and a tinting base for custom colors your choice is unlimited.  All the colors can be mixed and layered to create exciting effects; many patterns and variations that allow an artist to create.  Best thing about this product is it’s flexibility and ease of touch-up.  Goes on like butter and touches up without showing a seam.

Metal Leafing and Foil

Metal leafing or gilding; the use of extremely thin sheets of metal in gold, silver, and aluminum is an art form and has a mystique about it.  Water Gilding is a specialized skill and in furniture can really increase the value.  The real metal leaf is expensive and can run into the thousands for a project this size.  Real metal leaf is perfect for exterior applications or when you want the real thing.  It comes in different karat needs to be sealed or else it will tarnish.  If your not looking for the perfect gold leaf you can go the artificial way with aluminum sheets or foils.  The aluminum sheets don’t tarnish, look just like the real thing, and cost only hundreds of dollars compared to the thousand for real metal. 

When a design calls for gilding or a ceiling in this case it is a good idea both aesthetically and financially to go with a distressed look and to go with our final product which is a special foil product.  The foil is metallic on one side and dull on the other.  The surface needs to be colored and flat, so texture needs to be either sanded off or my favorite smoothed with plaster.  Once the base color is finished a glue size is applied then the foil right over that.  Foil is very reflective and comes in different colors and shades.  We have distributors that carry the typical metal(gold, silver, copper, and bronze) and several shades, different colors, and special holographic foils.  I think the holographic foil in a bar area either commercial or residential with the right lighting would be really psychedelic.  For residential areas I would go with the antiqued metals and maybe a focal wall in the other colors.  We can create designs using these foils and layer various foils.  Another idea is to create a lost in found effect over hand texture or accent over an old world texture.
